Winch Servicing
Lewmar recommends regular servicing of the winches. This usually involves
disassembling the winches, lubricating the pawls with light oil (they are
visible in the first photo), and greasing the spindle with heavy grease
(see second photo). This had not been done in a long time on my boat, but
the winches appear to still be in good condition. I removed all three
from the boat, to take home, wash, and lubricate.
The little black circle in the third photo is the circle of moss that was
growing under the jib winch.
When I reinstalled the port winches, I moved them outboard, to have a fair
lead from the rope clutch to the jib halyard winch. This winch is now able
to service the jib halyard and the first reefing line for the mainsail.
